iTunes Rentals Don’t Work (Yet); Is It Just Me?

Okay, I’ve downloaded the newest version of iTunes twice now (7.6), fresh off the news of the availability of the new iTunes movie rentals, but still nothing. I’ve yet to come across a movie that is rentable, despite checking most of those Steve mentioned (and even rented!) in his keynote this morning. Is it just me?

Let me ask you this: If it is not just me, and movie rentals aren’t available yet, despite nothing on Apple’s site or in the keynote to the contrary, then how in the hell does Apple come up with this Top Rentals list?

Apple’s got something funky going on, methinks. Either this list is made up of totally random movies (which isn’t likely given it hasn’t changed at all), it’s a template field remaining from the store redesign, or Apple is purposely promoting some really strange movies by making iTunes users think they’re what’s hot now. How these movies can get so hot without even being rentable is beyond me.

  1. Not just you. It isn’t working for me either. Kind of disappointing because I’m stuck in a hotel tonight and would love to rent movie.

  2. Me neither. I was totally planning to rent a movie tonight just for the fun of it, but none of them seem to be rentable… even if they are in that mysterious “top renters” list. Maybe they ran into some bugs today?

  3. This is buzzing all over the Internet. I got to your site after an hour of trying to find movies to rent on iTunes–and only coming up with one option: Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End. It’s unlike Apple to not deliver the goods promised. . . but it’s definitely not just you.

  4. That one doesn’t even show up as rentable for me. I literally have not found one rentable movie.

  5. Hmmm…Apple not living up to the buzz? Maybe they aren’t the superstars that everyone always annoyingly orgasms over. That’s just me though. I will still support those who love them :)

    Don’t hate me.

  6. You can only rent movies for your iTV box, not for your computer/ipod/iphone…

  7. Ah, it’s working now…

AC, actually you can rent from the AppleTV and from computers. AND you can transfer rented movies to the current lineup of iPods/iPhone and watch using them, too. Pretty cool.
